The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to support the independence and social and economic participation of people with disability.
A person who is:
- Aged between 9 and 65
- An Australian citizen, permanent resident or protected special category visa holder
- Lives in Australia
- Has a disability caused by a permanent impairment
- Usually needs disability specific support to complete daily life activities

NDIS funding pays for support workers to assist the participant to achieve the goals within their NDIS plan.
NDIS funding can only be used to purchase items where the NDIA have approved these items & they are stated within the participants’ NDIS plan.
The ‘my NDIS’ mobile app allows you to view your funding budgets & plan information.
No. NDIS funding is not means-tested & has no impact on your pension.
A quote outlines the cost of the services & supports to be provided by a service provider.
A service agreement sets out the terms & conditions that apply to the delivery of supports & services by a service provider.
The NDIS will fund transport allowance if the participant cannot use public transport without substantial difficulty due to their disability. Transport allowance can be either included within the participants NDIS plan or paid into the participants bank account fortnightly.
You can ask the NDIS to make a change to your plan at any time. If there is a mistake in your NDIS plan or your circumstances have changed the NDIS will review your plan. If you don’t agree with a decision that has been made by the NDIS you can ask for an internal review of your plan.
Local Area Coordinators (LAC’s) support participants through their plan & monitor how the plan is going. NDIS planners develop participant plans which involves identifying the participants goals, support needs & allocation of funding budgets.
A plan manager is a financial intermediary who supports you to manage your NDIS funding. A plan manager pays your service providers & helps you keep track of your NDIS funding.
